Consultative meet agrees on RIIN, with caveat | MorungExpress


Exercise only after final modalities agreed among stakeholders

DIMAPUR, JULY 17 (MExN): A consultative meeting held among Nagaland legislators, tribal hohos, civil society organizations, NGOs and government officials on the exercise for creation of Register of Indigenous Inhabitants of Nagaland (RIIN) on Wednesday at State Banquet Hall, Kohima.

According to a DIPR report, the house unanimously resolved to support and extend cooperation to the State Government for implementation of the Register of Indigenous Inhabitants of Nagaland (RIIN).

However, it comes with some caveat. It was resolved that the enumeration process for implementation of RIIN would be carried out only after consultations with all stake holders and the final modalities / guidelines are agreed upon. ”

Earlier in the meeting, the tribal hohos and civil society organizations were given an opportunity to express their thoughts and suggestions for effective implementation of RIIN. All the tribal hohos and CSOs present endorsed the decision of the State Government for creation of the RIIN and desire to support the initiative of the government.

However, they also asked the government to give sufficient time to have further discussion on the matter and suggested the need to work out clear and practical modalities to be adopted while exercising the RIIN, the DIPR report stated.

Chief Minister of Nagaland, Neiphiu Rio in his remarks called upon all the tribal hohos and civil society organizations to cooperate with the government in this endeavor. He said the government alone would not be able to carry out this task and as such urged all concerned to be part of this exercise by way of engaging themselves with the common people at the grassroots level.

As suggested by tribal hohos and CSOs, the government would also reconsider the timeframe and also work out the modalities with the help of various stakeholders, he said.

The meeting was chaired by Chief Secretary Nagaland, Temjen Toy and introductory remraks were given by Deputy Chief Minister, Y. Patton.

From the state government side, the meeting was attended by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and his cabinet colleagues, Speaker, Deputy Speaker and members of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly, senior state government officials and office bearers.

From the tribal hohos, CSOs, representatives from Angami Public Organization, Ao Senden, Chakhesang Public Organization, Chang Kulei Setsang, Konyak Union, Khiamniungan Tribal Council, Lotha Hoho, Phom People Council, Pochury Hoho, Rengma Hoho, Sumi Hoho, Western Sumi Hoho , United Sangtam Likhum Pumji, Yimchunger Tribal Council, Zeliang Peoples Council, Eastern Nagaland Peoples Organization, Nagaland Tribes Council, Central Nagaland Tribes Council, Naga Mothers Association, Eastern Nagaland Women’s Organization, Naga Students Federation, Eastern Naga Students Federation, Nagaland GB’s Federation, Naga Council Dimapur, Joint Committee on Prevention of Illegal Immigrants, Senior Citizens Association of Nagaland attended the meeting.
